Total denim: the jeans look that always works

Whether you want to feel like Britney Spears or Dolly Parton, my friend, feel free to choose whichever diva reference you prefer, but one thing is certain: you can never go wrong with total denim.

But before we dive into the glam, here are two little historical facts you might not know—perfect to drop during an aperitivo between a Bloody Mary and a few crunchy tarallini. Do you know where the word Denim comes from? It derives from the French expression “serge de Nîmes”, referring to a sturdy fabric produced in the city of Nîmes. From “de Nîmes”, indicating its origin, the word “denim” was born.

And if our cousins across the border had already grasped the success of this revolutionary fabric, we in Italy were not far behind. In fact, in Genoa, sailors wore very resistant cotton trousers, and from the name of the city pronounced in French, Gênes, the term “jeans” was born.

Total denim: when to wear it?

Perfect, now that we’ve earned the respect of the entire table, we can go back to talking about glam. Total denim is simple, immediate, and suitable for all seasons. Is it cold? You wear jeans and a denim shirt with a warm knitted vest. Is it a bit chilly? A denim skirt, a shirt, and a light cardigan—which, even just draped over your shoulders later on, always has its charm. Whether it’s trousers or a long skirt, a dress or a midi skirt, an oversized shirt-dress or a pencil dress, the versatility of denim is something unique.

Total denim outfit: the “extreme match”

Personally, I’m a huge fan of what I love to call the “extreme match”, which means creating a perfect match between the denim wash of the outerwear and the lower silhouette. My favourite combo, as well as my quintessential go-to look, is an oversized shirt in light denim paired with cigarette jeans in the same wash.

And do you know the best thing about this look? Even though it’s always the same, composed of the usual two pieces, it never truly feels the same because it takes on a different shade based on the accessories I choose to enrich it with and the shoes I decide to wear. With a gold necklace and earrings in the same tone, it takes on 90s vibes; playing with silver makes it look cleaner; and if I decide to give it a country twist, I play with leather details and a red bandana, around my neck or hanging from a belt loop.

Total denim in the evening too

And if you’re imagining total denim looks only for the daytime, don’t forget that denim finishes (much like the ways of the Lord) are infinite. There is a truly vast range of dark colours to play with even for evening occasions… What else is there to say: may the denim be with you!
